Why do SEO professionals run ranking reports? Rankings are important because better ranking means that a site can capture higher share of search volume for a keyword. And at the end of the day, that is SEO all about, capturing the as much share of search volume as possible. But does last week's Google announcement about enhancements in keyword level reports means no more ranking reports? I would like to believe so!
Details
Late last week, Google announced on it's blog here, that webmaster account keyword reporting will expand beyond "Top Search Queries" and will provide more information at a keyword level. Key enhancements are -
More Data - Website owners will have access to the following keyword level data -
- Keyword (Search Query)
- Impressions (the number of times that your site’s pages appeared in the search results for the query)
- Clickthrough (the number of times searchers clicked on that query’s search results to visit a page from your site
Number of Keywords - Another key change is the number of keywords in the report. Earlier, only top 100 search queries were displayed but now you can see thousands of keywords for your website!
Calendar - Now you can look at data for the last month, last week or another other duration, if you want. A search feature/filter also allows you filter the results to your selected keywords.
I am looking forward to moving away from an indicator (keyword ranking) of success to actual metric of SEO success (traffic share)!
Good job Google!
